Friday, June 3rd .... Today we rode 87 miles from St. Joseph to Chillicothe, Missouri. The weather was the best we have seen in two weeks! We had a little wind, but it was a following wind, and it was only 5-6 mph and starting temperature was in the uppers 50's.
Our route took us through Maysville, Missouri which has become a highlight of the annual Crossroads Bicycle Tour. As we entered town we stopped at the elementary school where we were greeted by 150 1st thru 3rd graders! They were full of questions about riding coast to coast. After visiting with the kids, we lined up and rode in double file into town. We were met by many of the town's people! They had sandwiches, sweet rolls, fruit and drinks for us. They were very excited to see us and encouraged us to tour their local museum focused on the local history of the people of the county and city. I took a number of photos of the exhibits. One of special interest was the photos of all the Crossroads rides which have been taken through the years!
After we departed, we settled into a beautiful ride. The countryside is interesting with old farmhouses and modern working farms. The road was a rollercoaster with one hill followed by another mile after mile. It looks like this is what we will be facing over the next few days.
There are many beautiful murals painted on the buildings in Chillicothe. And also, did you know this is where sliced bread was invented?
