Monday, May 9th .... Day two riding started off with high hopes and great expectations.  However, as I was riding out of the hotel parking lot my drive train locked up as the derailer broke!  That ended today's ride. Ordering the parts and having them shipped to tomorrow night's hotel means the bicycle won't be fixed until tomorrow evening!  So today and tomorrow I will be riding in the support van.  I am so frustrated!

In addition, today a husband/wife couple swerved to miss a dog and crashed.  They were transported to the hospital.  The wife has a broken wrist that requires surgery. The husband took a blow to the head and is under observation for a possible brain bleed.  When they are released, they are going home.


This is an insert from a fellow cyclist.  This is what I missed today!

90 miles - 7000 ft total elevation through San Jacinto mountains.  Chilly morning to pedal over seven foothills with snow covered mountains in the distance, then through the San Manuel Indian Reservation with the wind at my back for 30 miles before hitting the start of the Mojave Desert with blustery crosswinds.

 Thursday, June 16th .... Today was a day off for some much-needed rest!  My friend and riding buddy from Jacksonville, Stan Sanford, met me here in Erie, PA  This is where he grew up and started in the bicycle business while in school.  He worked here for fifteen years before moving to Jacksonville and started Champion Cycling.  He sold the business to some great guys who have carried on and continue to build a very successful business that has served the cycling community well. I met several people he worked with here in Erie.  They spoke as highly of him as we all have come to think of him in Jacksonville.  He also took me to many of the interesting sights in Erie.  Paul, one of Stan's sailing buddies, took us to lunch at the Yacht Club.  We are meeting another friend for dinner at a well known Italian restaurant.  This has been a great day. Stan will ride with me for the first 50 miles of our ride tomorrow from Erie to Buffalo. ...

 Tuesday, June 21st .... Today's ride took us to Troy, NY.  It was a long 100-mile ride.  Our route took us along parts of the Erie Canal and to a vista overlooking the rolling Countryside.  We were in some old historical areas of NY.  Many homes along the way had historical markers noting that the home was established in the mid to late 1700's.  In some cases, the homes have been owned and occupied by the same family generation after generation. The last 16 miles of the trip was on a bike trail.  It followed the river and for the most part was in the woods.  It was a beautiful ride.  Tomorrow we will leave NY and ride into the mountains of Vermont.  Ugh!  More climbing!

Thursday, May 26th .... Today was a short ride of 40+ miles!  The winds we saw for the past couple days have calmed.  It was a little in our face but nothing like the past two days!  Our only rest stop was Hooker, OK.  A lot of interesting stories about this town!  It was an easy ride and really enjoyable.  About 4 miles out of Hooker I had a flat tire!  I found a small thorn had punctured the tire.  I fixed it and was off to complete the remaining 16 miles.  I went another 4 miles and again had a flat tire!  This time it turned out to be a small tire wire!  Again, I fixed it and rode the remaining 12 miles.  Enjoyable day less the two flats!
