Monday, May 30th .... Today was an interesting and ultimately expensive day! We were delayed by 3 hours due to extremely high winds. After much discussion we departed. When we left the hotel, the winds were 27 mph gusting to 47 mph out of the South creating a significant cross wind! After about two hours of riding, we were making good time, and everyone seemed to be adjusting to the high winds. Toward the end of the ride the landscape changed to beautiful rolling hills carpeted with lush green grass and increasing numbers of trees. I stopped to take photos to include with my posts. After taking the photos I returned my phone to the crossbar bag and resumed riding. Shortly after we turned onto a new highway which had rumble strips covering the entire width of the apron every 100 ft. This caused us to have a very rough ride and was hard on both bikes and riders. When I arrived at the hotel, my crossbar bag was unzipped, and my phone gone! Apparently, I didn't zip up the bag and thus securing my phone. So, no photos of the new landscape to share with you. Fortunately, tomorrow is a rest day, and I will be spending most of it at a Verizon store replacing my phone.
Thursday, June 16th .... Today was a day off for some much-needed rest! My friend and riding buddy from Jacksonville, Stan Sanford, met me here in Erie, PA This is where he grew up and started in the bicycle business while in school. He worked here for fifteen years before moving to Jacksonville and started Champion Cycling. He sold the business to some great guys who have carried on and continue to build a very successful business that has served the cycling community well. I met several people he worked with here in Erie. They spoke as highly of him as we all have come to think of him in Jacksonville. He also took me to many of the interesting sights in Erie. Paul, one of Stan's sailing buddies, took us to lunch at the Yacht Club. We are meeting another friend for dinner at a well known Italian restaurant. This has been a great day. Stan will ride with me for the first 50 miles of our ride tomorrow from Erie to Buffalo. ...
